Yoga is the world’s oldest form of discipline. The word yoga comes from an ancient Sanskrit word meaning “union.” The main goal is to unite your mind with your body and unite those with your spirit so that you can live in harmony with yourself and others.
Yoga's Main Branches
Karma: This is the Path of Action.
Bhakti: This is the path of love and devotion to the Divine.
Raja: To control the mind and senses, and to achieve Samadhi.
Japa: Continuous repetition of a mantra, which helps the mind to focus.
Jnana: This is the path of wisdom and learning.
Hatha Yoga
This is the most popular branch of yoga. It combines the practice of specific poses, focused relaxation, breathing exercises, and meditation. Regular practice of Hatha Yoga helps you in several different ways.
Benefits of Hatha:
- Builds strength and coordination
- Focuses and calms your mind
- Increases physical flexibility
There are many different styles of Hatha. And then, there are many different styles within those styles. For example- Iyengar, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Bikram, and Integral are all forms of Hatha.
It is based on the philosophy that yoga's goal is to have an easeful body, a peaceful mind, and a useful life...
Before you hit the yoga mat, we teach you a few important terms like Sanskrit, Asana, Prana, Ahimsa, Namaste etc. to get you started. Learning them will make it easier for you to explore and expand your practice!
All our yoga sessions usually start with poses, move to deep relaxation, then to breathing practices, and close with meditation. We use simple, age appropriate poses and breathing practices only. As the student becomes more comfortable, (based on age and ability), we try to move from physical to mental level to incorporate a deeper awareness…..
The great thing about Yoga is that it is not a competitive sport, where you need to excel. It is something you do because it is good for you! You don't have to be thin, flexible, or athletic to do Yoga. Neither do you need any fancy clothes or equipment! All you really need is a desire to be your best, to relax, and to enjoy yourself!
If you have that desire, you are welcome to join us!
