I don't know the language(s) in my child's program. How can I compensate for my non-native language abilities and help my child ?
- Try to increase your child's exposure to the second language as much as you can.
- Make an effort to learn songs that you can sing to, or with your child.
- Acquire a library of books in a second language you can read to your child.
- Play children's song tapes in second language in the car, nap/play time.
- Find videos in the second language for your children for visual enrichment.
- Use a dictionary to look up a couple of new words each day.
- Play games with your children using the second language: Simon Says for colors, numbers, Bingo for body parts etc.
- Give yourself lots of encouragement and praise, do not get discouraged just because you find yourself fumbling for expressions and vocabulary.
